Genesis 4:9 – Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Cain thought that question would absolve him of some guilt of murdering his brother Abel.
Did Cain really know he was his brother’s keeper? It seems not. Like so many in this world, he didn’t have the most basic understanding of right and wrong.
And because they don’t, they suffer, which is all the more incentive for us to model at all times the righteousness the Bible teaches.
Maybe ten seconds of Cain listening to “You ARE your brother’s keeper” could have saved Abel’s life. Maybe 10 seconds of what we do or say even to a total stranger could do something similar.
Anyway, the Lord took pity on Cain for the harsh punishment upon him, and the Lord gave Cain a mark to let all who would slay Cain know that the Lord’s vengeance would be seven-fold upon him.
I wonder what the Mark of Cain was.
